Boyne Bridge, Ireland
The Boyne Bridge is the first cable stayed road bridge, and the largest of its kind, in Ireland. Designed by Roughan and O’Donovan, it is 384 metres long with a main span of 170 metres.
Background
Slim tubular tapering 10 metre lighting columns are bolted onto a sloping concrete plinth which creates a 78° angle between the column and bridge deck, this mirrors the angle of the support cables. The 2 metre outreach bracket arm is at an angle of 20° to the horizontal, and carries an Urbis Onyx 400 Watt metal halide lantern. White light was chosen to complement the architectural floodlighting scheme on the bridge structure.
