Products from the Zebra range
The Zebra range of lanterns is based on either the functional ZX3 or ZX4 body or the decorative Albany or Saturn lantern, and is designed to light a pedestrian crossing using positive contrast. This means that the lantern uses photometric control to give a high level of vertical illuminance on the pedestrian to make him visible to oncoming traffic.
In order to achieve this, the Zebra photometry is asymmetric (left handed or right handed). The lantern should be positioned between the crossing and the approaching traffic, with the peak beam directed away from the driver and onto the crossing. For driving on the left of the road, as in the UK, this means that for a two-lane bi-directional carriageway, the left-handed photometry is required on each side of the road. For a two-lane uni-directional carriageway, both left and right-hand photometry will be required.
It is essential that the lantern is placed between the driver and the crossing and that light is directed away from the driver's line of vision, otherwise the effect will be to provide disability glare to the driver and mask the pedestrian.
